Would keeping native animals as pets help lessen the threat to their species?

But they are so cuteWhile the existing belief is that wildlife should remain in the wild, others believe different. One esteemed biologist anticipates that keeping native Australian wildlife as pets could be detrimental to helping their chances of survival. A palaeontologist from the University of New South Wales, Mike Archer said that not authorizing the public to keep native animals as pets were “potentially a passport to extinction”. Insinuating the Australian wilderness is far less capable than the average human raising native animals. Though only South Australia and Victoria allow a permit to keep native animals as house pets, contrary to popular belief Archer believes “you wouldn’t be interfering with what’s happening to them in the wild”. Archer also raises the point of preventing many species from extinction if individuals had been allowed to keep wild animals as pets. It is commonly believed that wild animals belong in the wild, allowing nature to take its course, over the years, human interference has caused the extinction of several species. By hunting, overharvesting, introducing invasive species into the wild, polluting and changing forests and wetlands into croplands and urban areas, humans have driven several species to complete extinction. Taking into consideration raised by Archer, can humans reverse the damage that has already been done? It is difficult to believe that keeping native Australian wildlife as pets can cause a positive impact rather than a hindrance in nature’s course. Prevention is better than cureOne of many points made by Professor Archer is the extinction of Tasmanian tigers (thylacine). After Tasmanian sheep farmers believed that thylacines were eating their sheep, a bounty was paid between 1888 and 1909 and is believed to be the primary cause behind the extinction as over 4000 thylacines were killed. Archer said “The saddest thing about this whole story was… they were regarded as vermin” further implying the root of the issue was the perception of thylacines amongst people and not because humans weren’t treating wild animals as domesticated ones. The popularity of bearded dragons and reptiles growing among pet owners, collectors, and zoos as per WA-based reptile catcher Phil Schenberg. Many forget the harsh reality of their ignorance when it comes to owning a reptile species. “Bearded dragons make great pets for beginners. They can be very interactive and quite easy to look after with the right husbandry” said Mike Archer, not taking into consideration that if these wild creatures fall into the wrong hands, they are destined to disappear as many reptiles are legally exported and dried for their mythical medicinal properties. Most of the reptiles are taken from their homes in the wild for export purposes and for humans to even begin to reverse the effects of this trading would require 420,000 females and 42,000 males: 90,000 incubation containers and 336,000 cages plus food and a plethora of qualified staff. It all seems clear cut on paper but the reality of this would be considering the death rates and the 1.2 million reptiles which are exported. Admiring from a distanceAlthough Mike Archer’s love for wild animals leads him to believe their extinction could be prevented by keeping them as pets, people’s track record doesn’t make this idea plausible by any means. All wildlife thrives in its own habitats and has evolved in a way to keep generations of species alive thus far, intruding that would only cause a hurdle for their natural reproduction. A legend has passed.

A final goodbyeThe Melbourne Cricket Ground was filled with memories on the 30th of march, honouring former Australia test cricketer Shane Warne. Shane’s contributions to his sport, the state, and the country itself magnify the passion he had for cricket. After Shane Warne’s retirement in 2007, he played for 4 years in the Indian Premier League. Warne served both as a player and mentor for Rajasthan Royals and became the captain of the team when they won the inaugural IPL in 2008, beating Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings in the final. Shane Warne’s children unveiled their fond memories of their dad and took a trip down memory lane. ‘My dad just wanted to be the best dad he could be’ said Brooke Warne as she continues to describe her beloved dad and his everlasting legacy. All three of Shane Warne’s children spoke at the memorial amongst a sea of onlookers, everyone cherishing their fond memories of Shane Warne. Remembering the goodMany performances took place, with Ed Sheeran playing Shane’s favourite song as well as Robbie Williams performing Angels in tribute.  Actor Glenn Robbins recalled his experiences playing golf with Shane Warne saying ‘I used to play gold with him as well and it was hard because he had such a full life, and he would tell the best stories’ reminiscing core memories he has with Warne. Andrea Egan spoke on behalf of the UN wildlife fund and commended Warne’s work which had begun last year, showing his responsibility as an Australian to protect the wildlife ‘when he joined, he expressed his hope of trying to rewrite the future and protecting animals and their habitat’ Shane Warne has impacted many lives throughout his life, from being one of the best cricketers, a father, a friend, a brother, a husband, a son, to a lover of all animals. Warne has left his mark on all of us. The MCG’s atmosphere was quiet and sentimental in memory of Shane Warne. Source

Major changes – pre-departure tests no longer required

The news we’ve been waiting forAs the restrictions are easing around the world, it is imminent t for travel restrictions to ease as well. The Health Minister, Greg Hunt confirmed a plethora of changes on how COVID-19 is handled in Australia commencing from the 17th of April. Previously, travellers would need to show a negative RAT or PCR test before boarding, even if they were up to date with vaccinations. Restrictions of cruise ships and anti-price gouging penalties for rapid antigen tests will end as Mr. Hunt confirms he will not be renewing the COVID-19 biosecurity orders. “The country is ready to move on from the emergency declaration made two years and one month ago. I will not be renewing the biosecurity emergency determination,” from Mr Hunt during a press conference on the Gold Coast. This was much-needed news for travellers who are up to date with vaccinations and want to travel with no extra hurdles to worry about. Mask mandates remain during domestic and international flights and travellers will need to provide proof that they have received 2 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. Normalizing AustraliaIt is great to see changes in restrictions for travellers as many individuals are eagerly waiting to reunite with their families. Australia is on track to move on from the pandemic and is heading towards the normalcy we have all been craving for. It is important to mention that individuals are advised to be mindful of their health and if any symptoms occur, a RAT or PCR test must be done immediately. Though individuals will have to wait longer before being offered the fourth dose of the vaccine, for vulnerable travellers, the story is different. Including those over the age of 65 and individuals who are immunocompromised are encouraged to receive an additional ‘winter dose’ of the COVID-19 jab.
